AfroCuban Festival

Footprint Creative Arts Institute Website:footprintcreativearts.org presents it’s annual AfroCuban Festival.  The festival draws artists from diverse communities to celebrate similarities that stem from our traditional African roots.  The event is designed not only to bring about a cultural exchange in the city of Jackson, but also to bring about awareness of the efforts led by Pastors for Peace for a cultural exchange with Cuba and across the Globe.

In July 2009, over 130 Pastors for Peace volunteers from the US, Canada and Europe will challenge the immoral and illegal US blockade and travel restrictions against Cuba at the US - Mexico border.  They expect to collect 100 tons of humanitarian aid during a two-week caravan that will converge in McAllen, Texas before traveling on to Cuba without US treasury department licenses.  They intend to deliver school buses, construction tools and materials, educational supplies, medicines, and medical supplies gathered in communities throughout the US and Canada.  2009 marks the 20th annual caravan to Cuba.  Donations and aid are welcome to assist in the hurricane reconstruction after the three hurricanes that devastated Cuba in 2008.

The festival hosts Cuban Caravanistas as they travel through Jackson, MS.  African and Cuban / Latin dancers, drummers, bands, singers and poets come out and perform a benefit concert at Smith Park in downtown Jackson.  The festival promises to be an exciting, family fun and drum call event, forever living in the hearts and minds of participants, never ending - even at the close of the eye - Visions Dance!!! Hope to see you there.
