Best Wok

It seems like Best Wok just can’t lose. One of the most consistent winners in the five years of Best of Jackson voting, the Wok takes top billing in Best Chinese again in 2007. I’ve said it before—when the “old man” is there, then you’re right...it’s got a wide-ranging menu or well-prepared Chinese favorites that absolutely hit the spot when you’re jonesin’ for food from a paper carton. The runners up are all Jackson institutions—nobody horned in on the Best Chinese category this year, although Ichaban (which is Japanese, kiddies), got a few more votes than the average also-ran. Just remember the Best Wok motto, scrawled on the wall under the menus, if you decide to try them for the first time: “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.”

Best Wok woks away with the best take-out category again this year ... har, har ... but all deserved. Second place winner Bravo! is something of a surprise in the take-out category given that their food is second only to the see-be-seen atmosphere for Jackson’s conversation set, but the food is certainly good enough to be house-shoes worthy. Aladdin, in third place, has changed quite a bit since it got Best New Restaurant honors two years ago, and, aside from a switch away from all-night hours, the changes have all been for the better. What was once good Mediterranean fare is now even better, with a “gotta have it” falafel plate, an assortment of tasty kabobs and, of course, the fresh baklava for dessert. The atmosphere is more upscale for dine-in than it used to be, which might explain why fewer folks are taking out these days. They deserve a category or two just for the pride they’ve put into their Fondren location. — Todd Stauffer (Best Chinese, Best Take-Out, numerous years including 2007)
