Broad Street Baking Company
When it’s time to stoke up to face the day, many Jacksonians head for Broad Street, open seven days a week at 7 a.m., serving breakfast until 10:45 a.m. With a menu that suits those dining in or taking out, the hungry line up to pick from classic toast and eggs cooked to order, omelets, breakfast sandwiches with biscuits or croissants, homemade granola, cheese grits, and minted fresh fruit salad, not to mention the wide array of pastries. That’s when Broad Street bakes its artisan breads, too. You can choose from eight different breads, loaded with classic deli meats or Broad Street’s original concoctions, like their best selling sandwich, the smoked chicken BLT. Second in Best Sandwich, Basil’s takes some fine panini bread and makes various versions thereof, all fresh and delicious. - Lynette Hanson (Best Breakfast, Best Sandwich, JFP Best of Jackson 2007)

In this mass production world of pre-made, uninspired, quick assembly products, the artisan side of food preparation has been greatly diminished, and with it much of the soul of the products.
... so says Dan Blumenthal, Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Broad Street Baking Company & Cafe located in Banner Hall on I-55 North in Northeast Jackson. Dan is the grandson of Sol Blumenthal, a second generation baker of Eastern-European descent who operated a bakery of his own from the late 1940s through the 1970s in the Northeast. This bakery was located on Broad Street in Trenton New Jersey, and Broad Street Baking Company is a restaurant concept dreamed up by Dan, along with business partner Jeff Good, to pay homage to his grandfather’s legacy.
Just as Grandpa Sol did, over 50 years ago, Broad Street makes everything from scratch, taking lucky Jacksonians back to a time and place where generation after generation of artisan bakers created healthy products from scratch following old-world recipes, with their own two hands.
Walking into Broad Street is a treat for all five senses: it is a bright and bustling place, with wonderful aromas, sights and sounds. A faux cobblestone street runs through the heart of Broad Street; light wood, galvanized steel and street lamp-style fixtures give it a true “street feel”. It is a place where people grab a quick bite or spend an afternoon reading a good book over a cup of hot coffee and a tasty Danish, or working on their laptop computers, thanks to Broad Streets free Air2Lan wireless internet connection. The smell of fresh baked good permeates the air, a counter chock full of pastries and desserts overwhelms the eye, a rack of fresh-baked Sourdough, Italian and French breads covers the back counter wall. People are everywhere! Broad Street is as much a public gathering place as an eatery. It has been said that if you want to see someone you haven’t seen in a while, just hang out at Broad Street, they will eventually be there!
While breads and pastry serve as the “heart” of the business, Broad Street has one of the largest deli menu offerings in central Mississippi. From 7 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. seven days a week, Broad Street starts each day serving short order breakfasts, with eggs, omelets, breakfast burritos, croissant sandwiches, biscuit sandwiches as the featured items. Come lunch time, the menu shifts to made-to-order sandwiches on their gourmet breads, unique and overwhelming generous salads (the Cobb is a Jackson staple!), hearty soups (including the award wining smoked chicken and andouille sausage gumbo), quiche, po-boys, lasagna, and roasted chicken. At night, the menu expands even further to include pizzas on a choice of house-made Ciabatta or Sugar Busters crusts, truly exceptional pastas (curry chicken, shrimp and black bean, chicken and goat cheese to name just a few of the ever-creative nightly offerings).
Broad Street boasts 200 seats in four distinctive seating areas: the main dining room, outside on the patio under colorful umbrellas, upstairs in the Banner Hall atrium in front of the world-class Lemuria bookstore, or around the fountain and front entrance of Banner Hall on the first floor. In addition to dine-in, Broad Street supports a huge to-go business and is one of Jackson’s largest and most called upon corporate box lunch catering and special event catering businesses. (They have fed 1200 people a formal lunch in the Mississippi Coliseum when President Bush visited a few years back, and they have been asked to cater the prestigious Junior League Mistletoe Marketplace Preview Party a number of times.)
Most recently, Broad Street was selected by the HealthyJackson initiative as an example of a restaurant that serves quality, healthy food which is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Jacksonians with HealthyJackson membership cards (available for free via the www.HealthyJackson.org website) get a 10% discount off their bill when dining at Broad Street any time after 4 p.m. Broad Street’s involvement with HealthyJackson is but the latest in an endless string of socially conscious initiatives which owner’s Jeff Good and Dan Blumenthal feel are important to support as members of the Jackson community.
Broad Street serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week (with the exception of Sunday evening, when Broad Street closes at 3 p.m.).
