Cherokee Inn

What’s with the words in the Cherokee’s address? Old? That’s OK ‘cause it has been around for years. Square? Not hardly. Hip’s a better fit for the winner of five categories.

Whether you’re searching for a spot to drown your sorrows in cheap beer on a Friday night or an eatery for Saturday lunch to cure a beast of a hangover, the Cherokee’s it. Walk through the door and take a seat at the u-shaped bar. Order lunch and an ice-cold beer—hair of the dog and all that. While the talented and hard-working ladies in the kitchen cook up your order, mosey around the bar to the hallway behind it. There stands Jackson’s favorite. Feed the machine. It’s a well-known fact that music soothes the savage. Climb back on your stool and chow down on your piping hot burger and mound of cheesy fries,. A couple of beers later, you’re cured, ready to shoot pool in the room to the left of the bar after you’ve fed the jukebox again.

Even though lots of Southerners still refer to the noon-day meal as dinner, at Cherokee it’s known as plate lunch. Home-cooked food, heaped on your plate, served with sweet tea gets many a Jacksonian ready to face the rest of the work day. Even though there’s a larger lot on Old Square than there was on Northside, parking’s still a mess. Practice patience. It’s worth it, guaranteed.

The Cherokee Inn, a happening hang-out complete with great food and cheap drink, must be the place soul singer Mel Waiters has in mind when he croons, “Let’s go baby, to the hole in the wall.” Y’all voted that honor to the Cherokee, where you’ll have the best time.
— Lynette Hanson (2007 JFP Best of Jackson, multiple awards: 2007 Best Hangover Food, Best Hole-in-the-Wall, Best Jukebox, Best Place to Drink Cheap, Best Plate Lunch.)

* “The Cherokee” is a perennial Best of Jackson favorite, meaning multitudes of reader’s choice awards ever year.
