A native of Ruleville Mississippi in The Mississippi Delta, Eddie Fair earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Jackson State University, where he was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He later went on to earn a master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration from JSU.
In 2003, Fair was elected Tax Collector of Hinds County, defeating Republican incumbent Bill Burrow. He was re-elected in 2007. Prior to becoming tax collector, Fair owned a van-rental company and operated an Econotax franchise in Jackson.
In 2008, Fair placed Mayor Frank Melton’s home up for auction after Melton failed to pay property taxes on his Northeast Jackson home.
He is a Baptist, a rotarian, and a member of the NAACP.
