Float the Okatoma
The Okatoma Creek is the only whitewater in Mississippi. Easy enough for beginners and a great way for northern paddlers to stay in shape during the colder months up north, the Okatoma offers several ripples a few class I rapids and drops.
In perfect water conditions you might just find a couple of those drops at class II. A few of the shoots are fun to body surf, too.
The perfect stretch of the creek is around the Seminary, MS area. Lots of sandbars provide easy picnicking locations along the trip. We even found a rope swing that was great fun.
My mother, siblings and their families, wife and children went on the Okatoma trip. Our ages ranged from 8-70 years old, but all would agree it was the perfect day.
Folks can bring their own canoes or kayaks or they can rent them from Seminary Canoes. (Seminary Canoe Rental) from an outfitter. I’ve used the rental company in the past; they provide great service for reasonable rates. But my favorite part is that unlike most canoe rental places I’ve visited (all over the U.S.) you park your car at their location right on the river.
They then take you up river and you float back to your car. No waiting for the shuttle bus at the end of your ride. They also offer clean restrooms and hot showers (tent camping, cabin rentals, and RV site hook-ups are also available).
The Okatoma is great fun and the float trip can take a few hours or all day, depending on how often you want to stop, how much exploring you want to do and how much time you want to play on the rapids, rope swings and in the swimming holes.
