Jim Hill High School
Jim Hill hosts the state’s only International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which is a “vigorous” course dedicated to educating its students in worldly academic excellence. The school is known, among other things, for being the only one in the state to host the IB program; the Jim Hill Choir, which is noted for having travelled widely and ranking among the top choirs in the world; and its esteemed JROTC program SOAR programs that are hosted there. Lydia Haynes is the current principal of Jim Hill, replacing Dr. Earl Watkins in 2002. Barbara Hilliard is the current IB coordinator.
Jim Hill was founded in 1912 by James Hill, hence the name “Jim Hill” High School, for the establishment of a secondary institution for African Americans in the Jackson, Mississippi area. The current building was constructed in the 1960’s. The International Baccalaureate Program hosted there was established in 1992.
