Kats Wine Cellar

Kats Wine Cellar
901 E. Fortification, 601-354-9181

Kats has been selling Jacksonians vino and liquor since 1967, and its location today, just east of Fenian’s, makes it the most convenient stop for anyone living in Belhaven. The staff at Kats tells it straight—they can guide you to a dry Riesling (yes, there is such a thing) or a jammy Cabernet. And let’s not forget our good friend liquor, for those nights when fancy gives way to frenzied. Whatever your drinking needs, Kats will deliver. (Unfortunately, they don’t actually deliver.)

Kats has been Jackson’s favorite neighborhood liquor store since 1967. Kats has all the liquor essentials—from cheap vodka not fit for a Russian tractor to the finest Polish imports, from syrupy abominations like Jagermeister to that celebration of the raspberry, Chambord. As for wine, this isn’t the biggest liquor store in Jackson, but each bottle is selected with care. You can aid the enemy by selecting a Chataneuf du Papes from France (my favorite, Chateau la Nerthe is available at a very reasonable price) or you can aid the other enemy and buy robust red zinfandels from Schwarzenegger’s California. Come to think of it, I’m pretty sure New Zealand and South Africa are enemies now, too, which brings me to my personal theory of viticultral geopolitics—they’re all enemies, so drink up. Be sure to ask the knowledgeable staff for their recommendations, and if you ever have the time, chat up the security guards. They’re pretty interesting, folks. Perhaps the best endorsement I can offer is a confession: When we’re done putting out this crazy issue of the JFP, I’m driving straight to Kats to buy some celebratory vino.

To me, the mark of a good liquor and wine store is a place where they can tell me what I need to buy without treating me like I’m an unsophisticated idiot. And where they have options that I can take to any type of event. Kats Wine Cellar fits this bill: It’s a neighborhood liquor store where everyone knows your name and, better yet, the kinds of wine your significant other tends to buy when he’s in there without you. It’s small, but packed with wine and liquor options. Kats provided wine for the JFP table in Fondren Corner during ARTMix and was extremely helpful each time, suggesting an affordable jug wine that people enjoy. They are part of the community, and right in the heart of a future Renaissance area of Jackson: the Fortification Street corridor.

A word, as well, about McDade’s and Briarwood: These are two other liquor stores with great selection and personal service. All three of these businesses are local businesses of the highest order, and we’re proud they’re our readers’ choices.
