Laurel Isbister

North Carolina native Laurel Isbister, 35, chose to make Mississippi home in 2003, where her maternal lineage is nine generations. Isbister started singing solos in the church when she was nine.  She studied choral music in college and traveled to Bulgaria to continue her studies.  Isbister serinades with acoustic guitar singing originals, Americana and blues covers.  She says some of her haunting melodies are influences from living in Bulgaria.

In 2005, Isbister released Nona Mae’s Wishes on Camel Records.  Nona Mae was her grandmother who lived in the Mississippi delta where Isbister made summer visits.  Isbister’s eclectic style reflects her adventures and study and her sound is influenced by Patti Griffin and Sheryl Crow. In Jackson she has performed with Scott Albert Johnson, Eric Stracener, Rhonda Richmond and Teneia Sanders. She is involved in the annual Chick Ball and enjoyes playing at benefit concerts.
