Mississippi ACORN
Mission: Started in 1970, ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is the nation’s largest community organization of low- to moderate-income families. Nationwide, ACORN has affected change in neighborhood safety, health and environmental justice, and voter participation among many other causes. Among ACORN’s many accomplishments are the 1998 establishment of the Living Wage Resource Center in Boston to help track living wage movement and provide assistance to living wage organizers across the nation, and the passing of Florida’s Amendment 5 in 2004, increasing the state’s minimum wage. ACORN’s first Mississippi chapter opened in 2005.
