Mississippi Independent Publishers Alliance
The Mississippi Independent Publishers Alliance formed after The Clarion-Ledger sprang its TDN scheme on Jackson. The Clarion-Ledger told businesses where other local distribute that it could clean up the “clutter” of free publications (many of which are owned by The Clarion-Ledger]] and its owner the Gannett Corp.. The business just had to sign an “exclusive” deal with TDN for one of its multi-boxes, and then TDN would charge local publications, such as the Jackson Free Press to be in the box and then split the take with the business. TDN staffers even provided businesses with a list of “accepted” publications that made it appear as if local publications had signed on, when they had not. In response, many of those publications joined forced and formed the Mississippi Independent Publishers Alliance (MIPA) and purchased its own multi-boxes. MIPA has taken back many of the initial spots that TDN had kicked local publications out of by offering non-exclusive deals with the businesses. The scheme drew the MIssissippi Attorney General Jim Hood‘s attention; his office dropped investigative subpoenas on The Clarion-Ledger for its TDN scheme, and soon afterward then-publisher John Newhouse abruptly resigned.
