Mississippi Protection and Advocacy System
Mission: Since 1982, Mississippi Protection and Advocacy System, Inc. (MPAS), has been advocating for the rights of people with disabilities.
MPAS is independent of any agency, organization, or governmental unit providing treatment, services or rehabilitation to individuals with disabilities. MPAS receives primary funding through Public Law 95-601, Section 509 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Public Law 99-319 which authorizes protection and advocacy services. The agency has the capacity to pursue informal, administrative, and/or legal remedies in order to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.
MPAS staff is also responsible for providing public information concerning the rights of people with disabilities. They will assist professional and citizen groups by providing workshops on the rights of individuals with disabilities.
MPAS handles cases arising as a result of a person’s disability such as questions about education, employment, transportation, housing, architectural barriers, legal and human rights, abuse/neglect in institutions, etc. MPAS can pursue legal remedies, if necessary, and can assist with negotiations and administrative proceedings before state and federal agencies, city and county governments, and local school districts and institutions.
