Mynelle Gardens is the largest public garden in Jackson. Originally designed in 1920 by Mynelle Westbrook Hayward, it covers seven acres off Clinton Boulevard. With large azalea plantings, its especially beautiful in the spring, but the trails (some of them wheelchair accessible) that meander among the different areas, past ponds and small waterfalls, and over a series of distinctive bridges, make a trip to this garden a pleasure at any time of the year. As one visitor described it, Mynelle Gardens has a collection of Mississippi favorites planted in a series of lush and picturesque settings. Among them are an English bog garden, a medical and herb garden, a rustic garden, an old-fashioned garden, and its pice de rsistance: a Japanese garden. Plants range from amaryllises, daylilies, gardenias, pinks, and camellias; to roses and Asiatic magnolias; to a number of rare and ancient specimens some dating from the seventeenth century.
