Operation Shoestring

Mission: Founded in 1968, Operation Shoestring was started as a direct response to the changing demographics of the Bailey Avenue area. Wells United Methodist Church, saw a need to curb the rising racial and social issues in the community. Initially, operation Shoestring was located in the basement of Wells United Methodist Chuch. Russell Gilbert pioneered the program, and bagan the legacy that is carried on today. Within a year of opening, Operation Shoestring offered a number of services to the community. “Today, Operation Shoestring works as an interfaith ministry with support from a variety of individual and corporate funders, local congregations and several public entities. Our programs and services promote health and self-sufficiency in our target neighborhoods, uplifting the needy and brightening the future for us all…especially our children,"(as stated on the Operation Shoestring website).

Robert Langford is the executive director of Operation Shoestring.
