Press Release, Oct. 1, 2009:

Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. Names Police and Fire Chiefs

Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. shared his selections for Police and Fire Chiefs this morning in a news conference. Jackson State University Director of Public Safety Rebecca Coleman was tapped to head Jackson’s police force and former Jackson Fire Chief Raymond McNulty was asked to take the reigns of the Jackson Fire Department.

“I am confident that both these individuals can hit the ground running to lead our public safety departments,” said Mayor Johnson.  “Each of them has a great deal of knowledge of their respective departments and have both served in them previously.”

Rebecca Coleman is a product of the Jackson Police Department, having graduated from the academy in 1974 and worked through the ranks as an officer, sergeant, supervisor and deputy chief of police in the department for twenty years.  Additionally, Ms. Coleman served as Chief of Police and Assistant City Manager in Forest Hill, Texas and as Associate Director and most recently as Director of Public Safety at Jackson State University.  In addition, Ms. Coleman, at one time, headed up the Fraud Investigations Unit of the Mississippi Department of Human Services.

Raymond McNulty served as Jackson’s Fire Chief for more than seven years of Johnson’s previous administration.  Chief McNulty too worked his way through the ranks of the Jackson Fire Department having served in a number of leadership roles.

Coleman and McNulty must be confirmed by the City Council.
