These are the types of comments we have been receiving since opening Sal & Mookies in late April of this year. Sal & Mookies New York Pizza & Ice Cream Joint incorporates the best aspects of classic Little Italy caf style dining in a very casual, visually appealing atmosphere. The centerpiece of the restaurant is the kitchen and the four custom-manufactured brick pizza ovens imported from a family-run oven manufacturing plant in New Jersey www.marsalsons.com. These brick-lined, gas-fired parabolic ovens produce a crust and texture that no other pizzeria in the state is is able to match. Hand in hand with this, Chef Dan, and our Chef/Pizzaiolo Jon Pixler, worked tirelessly to perfect both a pizza dough recipe and a basic sauce recipe which further differentiates the Sal & Mookies New York Pizza from any other. Our goal is to create and deliver an unparalleled product something to clearly be regarded as best in class. Classic home-style pastas
Sal & Mookies is a casual, family-friendly full-service restaurant, and guests receive a quality experience from well trained staff. The decor for the restaurant, complete with the open kitchen and massive brick ovens, is that of a 1930s Little Italy restaurant. Warm colors, wood trim elements, real brick floors, unique black and white photos of 1930s New York, and antique furniture pieces used as service stations provide a well-integrated, thematic backdrop to the menu. Red and white checkered table clothes with real china, glassware and cloth napkins round out the authenticity.
Seating choices will include traditional tables, booths and a huge family table in the middle of the restaurant in front of the kitchen - large families and very popular! In addition to the inside dining rooms, we have built one of the largest outdoor decks in the city: an Italian Porch completely covered and decorated with looping Italian lights for an authentic, and romantic setting. Fans for hot weather and heaters for cold extend the hours and days the deck can be enjoyed.
Wine, beer and mixed drinks: No other pizzeria in the tri-county area offers beer, wine and a full bar Sal & Mookies does. Our wine service is in keeping with our theme: in addition to a well thought out wine list, we boast a private label SAL & MOOKIES HOUSE WINE, served by the bottle, carafe or glass. We offer a huge selection of beers 15 on draft and 42 by the bottle. We have a complete and well-stocked liquor offering, leveraging off our knowledge and success at BRAVO! www.bravobuzz.com. In addition, we are quickly becoming the gold standard for creative and premium non-alcoholic choices, as we boast a huge menu of Kid-friendly drinks, mocktails for teenagers and quality non-alcoholic adult choices.
But what about the ice cream?? This is where it gets really fun! Sal & Mookies is the only restaurant in Jackson with an integrated ice cream scoop shop as a part of the concept. The Sal & Mookies ice cream counter offers a changing display of 18 types of gourmet small batch, hand made ice cream, a myriad of house made desserts (baked by our staff at Broad Street) and a complete espresso, cappuccino and coffee selection. Shakes, sundaes and splits round out the ice cream offerings.
A very significant feature of the ice cream shop is that it also serves as the one-stop take out counter for all call in orders for the restaurant. Families eat out a lot, and take out is a big part of the weekly program in many homes. Sal & Mookies has one of the most expansive menu offerings for pizzas (Americas #1 take out food!), hamburgers, grilled panini sandwiches, hot subs, pastas, and gourmet salads all available for call in and pick up. This means that the mother who watches her diet can eat a field green salad while the husband and kids devour an 18 pepperoni pizza! But EVERYONE can get ice cream we offer all our flavors packed to go, and we have a few high quality, no-sugar added selections so even the most diet-conscious can splurge!
