Platform:
1. Explain how & why you would provide good leadership for your ward?
I will provide competent representation that is both affirmative and vigilant. I am committed to Ward 6 getting its fair share of benefits and services that its citizens and businesses are entitled to, such as public safety, street maintenance, water, sewer and sanitation services, plus many other social programs, activities and events.
I will set in place a procedure for hearing and addressing grievance’s as they arise. No longer will Ward 6 citizens be allowed to slip through the cracks or be denied any city services that they are entitled to.
I have lived in Ward 6 most of my life. I have business in Wards 5 & 7, and I struggle to pay taxes in Wards 5, 6 & 7 as well. I am a lifelong citizen of the city of Jackson, with over 35 years as a successful businessman. I AM aware of the problems that citizens and businesses face. I also know how to get things done!
My support on city issues will always be made in mind with “What’s best for Ward 6?”
2. What are your infrastructure priorities and how would you pay for infrastructure repairs?
My first three priorities are roads, business revitalization and development, with aesthetic improvements for all properties of both private and commercial.
Street repair must be performed on the entire stretch of Suncrest Drive, from Cooper Road to Robinson Road Extension, hopefully coordinating with Ward 5 repairs where this road changes into Robinson Road Extension, since it is used equally by the citizens of Ward 5 and Ward 6.
We must also affect the street resurfacing of Forest Hill Road (note that this project has already been approved and is on the 2008 Street Resurfacing Program). I will pursue this matter!
President Obama’s Stimulus Program will provide more road-resurfacing for the seven Wards in Jackson, Mississippi. I will see to it that Ward 6 gets its fair share of these funds. This may be our only chance for desperately needed sidewalks near schools, parks and shopping centers.
3. What measures would you propose/support for combating crime in the city?
I would support an investigation into alleged corruption and misconduct by any member of our law enforcement department. I expect moral and ethical conduct that is befitting those who serve and protect the citizens of this Capitol city. At worst, we’ll weed out some bad guys. At best, we’ll achieve the vindication and restoration of the public trust.
The real issue of street crime has to be dealt with on a street level. This is essentially our platform: Let’s fix Ward 6. It stands to reason that we, as a smaller community group, are more likely to have the biggest impact on criminal activity where we live and work. After all, we are Americans and Citizens of Jackson, Let’s get busy.
4. How would you handle the police Chief position? Would you support returning to a full-time chief? Why or why not?
Can the public safety of our State Capitol afford to be delegated to a part time priority?
5. What are your economic-development priorities for the city?
I support the downtown redevelopment projects, including the Farrish Street project. It is designed to increase traffic and revenue in our Capital City. However, my support on city issues will always be made in mind with “What’s best for Ward 6?”
6. How would you alter the employment pay/benefit structure?
My support on city issues will always be made in mind with “What’s best for Ward 6?”
7. How would you improve transparency in government?
I refer to the “Transparency in Government Act of 2008”,which is a broad legislative effort intended to make the work of Congress and the executive branch more transparent by creating laws and regulations that would bring more information online and available to the public in a timely manner. I have some ideas and recommendations that will:
1. Enhance accountability
2. Increase citizen involvement in government
3. Raise performance
4. Boost government credibility
5. Reduce corruption
Visit our website at www.letsfixward6.com and get involved!
8. There are various proposals that would ostensibly help with flood control on the Pearl, and perhaps increase development a/or green space for the city. What program would you support and why?
I’m in favor to support flood control and development, but my support on city issues will always be made in mind with “What’s best for Ward 6?”
9. What needs to happen to improve the relationship between City Council and the mayoral administration?
That would depend on who the actual parties are after this election. But I will always demonstrate respect and promote good will among my peers. Let’s not assume that there will be any negative aspects to the relationship between our elected mayor and city council representatives.
10. What roll should the city play to help the youth of Jackson? Please provide your specific plans.
Budget dictates the creative powers of designing youth programs. When it comes to our youth, no price is too much! In June of 2008, Mayor Milton wanted $600,000 plus another $600,000 line of credit for city’s youth cleanup program. The vote was 4-3. Mr. Chrisler‘s vote was the tie-breaker that stopped the city youth cleanup. I would have voted in favor of Melton’s Program. I am always willing to invest in our youth. They are our future!
11. How would you bring new funds into the city of Jackson’s coffers?
I have several plans to bring outside money into Jackson. My past expertise was concert promotions. If you attended an R & B concert in the 70’s you attended a K & K Production show. Lee King & I promoted some of the biggest acts of the time. I will encourage other promoters to bring more Top talent to the Mississippi Coliseum and Auditorium. Concerts increase traffic, fills up the hotels and restaurants, which in turn increases overall revenue and taxes. I’d like to see similar events in Ward 6 for this same purpose.
12. Do you support making Capitol Street two-way?
I can see no reason at this present time for that to be anywhere near the top of my priority list. I am more interested in seeing that the things we already have are operating properly and efficiently, than I am in spending the hard-earned tax dollars of our citizens to disrupt the flow of traffic downtown by destroying the one-way conversion that cost so much and took so long to finish. For now I would like further consensus.
13. What can you do/support to make the city more attractive to residents?
Once again, I am in favor of anything that has a positive impact on Jackson. There is a “trickle-down” theory that says “What is good for Jackson is good for all”. I prefer a “trickle-up” approach. If we apply #1 through #14, it will make Ward 6 more attractive to residents and then it will ultimately be good for Jackson.
14. What can you do/support to make the city more attractive to businesses?
What’s best for Ward 6? I plan to promote and encourage business owners to take advantage of the City Store Front Matching Grant, where the city pays for 50% of a new store front up to $20,000. If a business lacks the resources, I will help in obtaining additional funding. Combine this with resurfaced roads, and the revitalization of Ward 6 business will drive itself with little or no help from the city. I say again, “Let’s Fix Ward 6!”
15. What is something fun/interesting about you that few people know?
I’m certified in scuba and commercial deep-see diving. I was a US Army/Navy Diver and I have scuba dived all around the United States & in Hawaii.
I am a Hang Glider and have jumped off cliffs on the North shore of Owahu, Hawaii !!!
