The Smith-Robertson Museum and Cultural Center
528 Bloom St. (601) 960-1457
The Smith-Robertson Museum and Cultural Center houses a collection of African-American art and artifacts, including quilts, memorabilia, and papers associated with black Mississippians of the last several centuries. It’s a wonderful assortment of objects that documents the cultural achievements and life experiences of various unknown as well as famous African-Americans from the area, and the visit is made all the more impressive and moving by its location in the first school for blacks in Jackson. Opening in 1894, the school is most well-known for its graduate Richard Wright, author of Black Boy and Native Son. A few hours spent at Smith-Robertson is nothing like going to a new art museum—such as the Mississippi Museum of Art, just a few blocks away—since here the building itself is a key part of the experience.
