St. Mary Catholic Church

Nestled right in a quiet sector of West Jackson stands St. Mary’s, an imposingly Gothic edifice more awe-inspiring than St. Richard’s and more impressive than the cathedral downtown. Its placement on an otherwise typical residential street, in the center of a wide stretch of lawn with beautifully desolate Claiborne Park right next door, makes St. Mary’s all the more worthwhile to stop by for a quick bend of the knee and prayer to the heavens.

Check out the dazzlingly vivacious stained glass windows while the architectural side of your brain notes the typical cross shape of the nave. Slope your fingers smoothly across the old-fashioned communion rail and reflect sadly on the visibly missing ceiling tiles and other signs of decay. St. Mary’s is a graying, shrinking parish, which means your chance at a landmark sighting is vanishing small.
