Susan Voisin
Susan Voisin is the writer and photographer behind FatFree Vegan Kitchen, one of the most visited food blogs on the internet. A resident of Jackson, Susan creates meat-free recipes based on local produce and readily-available ingredients. Her blog has been featured in several national publications, including VegNews Magazine and Vegetarian Times. It was the winner of VegNews’ Reader’s Choice Award in 2007, voted Best Theme in the 2007 Food Blog Awards, and named one of the 21 best vegetarian blogs by VegNews Magazine in 2008. Though her blog has received national attention, she’s managed to escape local notice except for one recent article on GetFitMississippi.com that was reprinted in the Clarion-Ledger.
Writing the blog has led to several opportunities for Susan. She was approached by cookbook writer Nava Atlas and asked to take the photos for her latest book,Vegan Express, which was released in February of 2008. And recently Susan was invited to teach a cooking class at the McDougall Health and Medical Center’s Celebrity Chef Weekend in Santa Rosa, California. Her presentation centered on healthy, quick, and easy dishes that appeal to both vegetarians and meat-eaters.
Susan enjoys showing people that vegetarians do exist in Mississippi. She tells people, “If I can be a vegan in Mississippi, you can be one in the Northeast, the Midwest, or anywhere.” But the truth is that she doesn’t have any trouble finding exotic-sounding ingredients locally. “Between Rainbow and local Asian and Indian grocery stores, just about anything a vegan could want is easy to find in Jackson.”
Susan is married to attorney David Voisin and is the former project director for Mississippians Educating for Smart Justice.
