The Vicksburg Theatre Guild is the oldest chartered community theater in Mississippi. Chartered in 1936, it actually began performing plays in 1933, first on a riverboat, then at a converted church on Bowmar Avenue, and now at the Parkside Playhouse, 101 Iowa Avenue. The Parkside Playhouse was built in 1978 and is on the Vicksburg Scenic Tour. The guild produces four or five main-stage plays each season, plus Gold in the Hills and Fairy Tale Theatre. All work is done by local volunteers.
Main-Stage Theatre
There is nothing like the intimacy and excitement of live theatre! After many hours of rehearsal, actors and actresses become their characters before your very eyes. Enjoy drama, comedy, and song on the Parkside Playhouse main stage each September, November, February, and May.
Gold in the Hills
Gold in the Hills, “The Guinness Book of World Records” longest-running show, has been produced annually since 1936. The 1890s audience-participation melodrama runs each March, April, and July. It’s the story of a relentless hero, a winsome heroine, a ruthless villain, beautiful can-can dancers and the wilder side of city life in the infamous New York Bowery. The show promises fun for the whole family. Sing along with the cast, cheer the hero, and boo the villain.
Fairy Tale Theatre
Fairy Tale Theatre is a summer workshop for children ages 7 to 18. Four different plays are chosen each year for children to learn acting, directing, set construction and backstage tech. Young children are involved as actors and older children direct. Auditions are each April, rehearsals take place during June, and the shows are at the end of June.
