How to Use Jackpedia
Jackpedia is a wiki, which is a special sort of website designed for easy, collaborative editing. If you’ve ever visited Wikipedia then you’ve seen a wiki in action.
The purpose of Jackpedia is to allow people who know something about the arts, culture and interest groups in Jackson, Mississippi to share that knowledge and interest with others.
Why a wiki? The idea is that a wiki is easy to use. All you have to do is be a confirmed member of the site and you can start adding pages or editing pages that already exist.
How to Edit Stuff
Once you’re logged in, you’ll see an Edit link at the top right of each document window.
Click that link and the page will change. Instead of the page’s text, you’ll see a large text area that shows you the editable version of that text.
On the Edit page, you can change the text, add new text and, hopefully, contribute to the value of the wiki! While editing, a few basic commands can be used to alter the look of the text. This wiki recognizes the same pMcode that you may have used on the Jackson Free Press site, so that you can use codes like:
For a more complete reference, see pMcode.
You can add images, to as well. To do so, click the File Upload button that appears above each wiki page. That brings up a special page that enables you to browse for and upload certain accepted file types. Once the file is successfully uploaded, you’ll see two boxes; one of them shows you the code for linking to the image or file, while the other shows you the code for embedding the image as a file.
Just copy one or the other of those commands out of the window, paste it into a wiki page and you’ll have a link or a new image.
Speaking of which, you can create new pages in your wiki just as easily. All you have to do is surround the name of a new page with double brackets, as in:
Once that page is saved, the result will be a new link in the document that includes a “new page” character at the beginning of the link text.
When you click that link, you’ll see a new page appear; you can then click the Edit button and start all over again; you’ve got a completely new page to work with. This is great if, for instance, you want to add your band to a list of bands or add a new venue to a page that consists of a list of venues. Just use the double brackets to name a new page after your band and save the page. Now,
You can also create a page name with different link text, as in something like this:
In this case, the name of the page that’s being created will be “Fenians” (you can’t have an apostrophe in the name of a page, after all) but linked text itself will be Fenian’s Pub.
And what happens if you build a link to a page that already exists? Then the link will link to that page instead of creating a new one.
Sandbox
