wedge issue

A wedge issue is an emotional, divisive issue used in a cynical way by politicians in order to divide the electorate—to “drive a wedge” between groups. In Mississippi, historically race has been used as a strong wedge issue (see: southern strategy), as have many so-called family-values-type issues. Others include gay marriage, abortion, separation of church and state, and currently immigration policy.
